ALONG THE PECOS - NEW MEXICO HISTORY MUSEUM

Along the Pecos
A photographic and sound collage
June 19, 2015 through June 19, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday, June 19, 2015, 5-7pm
New Mexico History Museum, Santa Fe, New Mexico

One of the staples of desert life is the presence—or scarcity—of water. Its importance can be seen across eastern New Mexico, where the Pecos River strives to quench a fragile, 926-mile riparian environment. Along the Pecos, a collage of photographs and sounds, opens June 19 on the second floor of the New Mexico History Museum. Developed by photographer Jennifer Schlesinger and the late composer Steven M. Miller, the materials were recently donated to the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives, whose Photo Legacy Project collects the work of contemporary photographers.

PHOTO LAB AT THE NEW MEXICO MUSEUM OF ART

On display May 1, 2015 - July 26, 2015

The Photo Lab features photographs from the collection made with two historic processes: cyanotypes and albumen prints. Both were popular in the nineteenth-century and examples are on view by early practitioners including Francis Frith, Julia Margaret Cameron, and Arthur Wesley Dow. These processes have been revived by contemporary artists -- such as Rita Dewitt, Betty Hahn, Robin Hill, Jennifer Schlesinger, Nancy Sutor, and Zoë Zimmerman – whose work is exhibited alongside the earlier masters. Find out about these colorful photographic process and check out a selection of historic cameras, a comment board, touch-screen videos, books, and more!

ALMOST HEAVEN: A photographer uses 19th-century techniques to create dreamy visions

By: Michael Abatemarco

Pasatiempo, Santa Fe New Mexican

Utopia calls to mind a peaceful, harmonious, and just society where there is no poverty or war and citizens enjoy a fair portion of prosperity and happiness. It is a society where there is no want, an idyllic state not unlike heaven but similarly difficult, perhaps even impossible, to reach. The photographs of Jennifer Schlesinger Hanson, on view in Figments of Reality: An Exhibition of Contemporary Landscape Images at Verve Gallery of Photography, underscore the notion of the idealized world as unattainable, ephemeral as a dream. Her Utopia series is an uncanny body of work in black and white, made using the 19th-century albumen-print process. “It has yet to be determined whether or not the series is complete but there are 10 images here,” Schlesinger Hanson, who is represented by Verve and also serves as the gallery’s director, told Pasatiempo. “They’re kind of exploring the idea of whether or not a perfect society can exist. I wanted to tweak them a little bit so that there would be something just a little off. I tried to make them these ideal, perfect landscapes — but with just a little slight something that makes them imperfect. That’s the idea behind the series.”
